Our Mission
For 40 years, SAS Julefly (SAS Christmas Charity Flight) has brought people together across borders to support children, families and communities in need. What began as a single charity flight has grown into a year-round initiative driven by SAS employees, partners and volunteers.
About SAS Julefly
SAS Julefly took off for the first time in 1986, originally delivering aid to Poland. Since 2003, the initiative has focused on Tallinn, Estonia, supporting children and families facing difficult living conditions. At the heart of the initiative are norwegian Karsten Midthun – known to many as SAS’ “Captain Fantastic” – and Mati Sinisaar in Tallinn.
Together with SAS employees, partners and volunteers, they have spent decades turning the annual flight into a year-round effort that continues to make a tangible difference.
Making a Difference Together
What started as a single charity flight has grown into a year-round initiative supported by SAS employees, partners, sponsors, organizations, and private individuals.
Today, truckloads of supplies accompany the annual flight, and the support extends far beyond Tallinn. Assistance now reaches more than 20 orphanages, including the Tabita Center in Riga, and supports families and refugees affected by the war in Ukraine.
As a participant, you’ll get a rare opportunity to experience this work firsthand, meet some of the people behind the initiative and see how 40 years of collaboration have created an impact far beyond a single annual flight.

Why it Matters
Aviation does more than connect destinations. It connects people, communities, and opportunities. SAS Julefly is a powerful reminder of how the aviation industry can help bridge the gap between those with resources and those facing hardship.
Driven by the dedication of SASemployees and volunteers, the initiative continues to demonstrate the positive impact that collective action can have across borders.
